TRIP OVERVIEW
Upper Mustang trek is one of the thrilling journey in Nepal. The Kingdom of Mustang, referred to as Lo, is a secret Buddhist realm that may be reached via the Upper Mustang trip. The inhabitants and culture of this isolated region of the trans-Himalayan mountains, which borders Tibet, are distinctly Tibetan, as is the desert terrain of towering cliffs and unusually colored and shaped rocks.
The journey begins in Kagbeni, the entry point to Upper Mustang, and continues through a desolate area under the Dhaulagiri massif’s rain shadow to Lo-Manthang, the former seat of the Kingdom of Lo’s kings.
Discover more about the local culture by touring caves, gompas, monasteries, and rock art. You can witness panoramic views of the Nilgiri, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and other mountains in this voyage.
And for the further cultural understanding of the region, may be gained by visiting the King’s palace, Namgyal Gompa, and Tingkhar, the final major settlement in the northwest of Lo Manthang.
Visitors may also learn about this ancient medical skill and how it is being modified to fit contemporary circumstances at the museum and school dedicated to amchi (traditional Tibetan doctors).
If you walk for few hours from Lomanthang You can explore a reknowned Gyakar, Gompa. The more than 1,200-year-old Ghar Gompa is devoted to Guru Rinpoche, who visited these regions back then.
The Gompa is well-known for its rock drawings and for the belief that wishes made here would be granted.
The dry air makes the relatively high altitude (3,000–3,800m) walk more difficult.
Although people born at this elevation have no trouble traveling quickly, tourists tend to travel more slowly to prevent any issues caused by the altitude. Walking takes five to seven hours a day on average, and certain trails are very dusty and windy.
However, one will never forget this journey into the forbidden region of Upper Mustang, which partially follows the historic salt route.
