TRIP OVERVIEW
The Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek provides a chance to discover the secluded and unspoiled regions of the Himalayas, which are encircled by majestic peaks and a variety of scenery. At 8,586 meters, Kanchenjunga, also called the “Five Treasures of Snow,” is one of the world’s most majestic peaks and the trip leads you to the foot of the third-highest mountain in the world and second of Nepal.
The Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, a protected area that is home to a wide variety of flora and wildlife, including birds, butterflies, and wild creatures like snow leopards, red pandas, and the Himalayan black bear, is one of the highlights of the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp walk. Numerous trees, shrubs, and plants line the trail, including the stunning rhododendron, which blooms in brilliant hues in the spring. With a number of old monasteries, shrines, and villages along the route, the conservation area is also rich in cultural history.
The opportunity to engage with the local people and discover their way of life is another feature of the South Kanchenjunga Base Camp hike. Numerous isolated settlements along the trail are home to ethnic groups like the Rai and Limbu, each of whom has its own distinct culture, traditions, and customs. Trekkers may engage with locals, discover their traditions, and feel the friendliness and warmth of the Nepalese people. The trek itinerary for South Kanchenjunga Base Camp also provides breathtaking views of the other peaks, such as Makalu, Lhotse, and the majestic Kanchenjunga.
Being regarded as one of Nepal’s most isolated treks, the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek is a genuine experience for anyone looking for a challenge. In addition to being less crowded than other well-known trekking locations in Nepal, the trip offers a more tranquil and private experience. The terrain gets more difficult as you approach the base camp, with steep climbs and difficult descents. You will be rewarded with expansive vistas of the surrounding summits, including Kanchenjunga and its neighboring peaks, so the effort is worthwhile.
It is crucial to remember that the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek is strenuous and necessitates a high degree of physical fitness. The trek may be difficult due to the high altitude and the rough terrain. Prior to starting the walk, it is also crucial to be psychologically and physically prepared.
Kanchenjunga regaining its popularity
In the early 1990s, the Kanchenjunga Trek was one of the most popular routes among adventurous trekkers, on par with Everest, Annapurna, Manaslu, Langtang, and Mustang treks. Whether as a standalone journey or as part of the Great Himalayan Trail, it served as a captivating starting point during Nepal’s golden era of camping treks. However, with the rise of well-established teahouse treks in other regions, Kanchenjunga gradually faded from the spotlight. In recent years, it has been regaining popularity thanks to its peaceful trails, remote charm, and breathtaking alpine scenery.
A brief flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur will begin the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek Itinerary. From Bhadrapur to Illam, it takes five to six hours via bus or vehicle. The following day, you will travel by car once more to Taplejung, the starting point of the hike. As the route moves from Taplejung towards Lali Kharka and then Khesewa, it will traverse large swaths of the subtropical rainforest. To get to Pumphe Danda, you will then have to cross a small brook and go through a forest. After some trekking, you will cross a suspension bridge to reach Yamphuding.
From Yamphudin, you will travel through gorgeous meadows and terraced fields to reach Torongding. Your Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek Route will proceed towards Cheram, also called Tseram, after Simbuwa Khola. Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek or Kanchenjunga North Base Camp Trek also meet at Tseram crossing the salela pass and rest here. To go to the South Base Camp, you have to pass through Ramche, Yalung Glacier and finally Oktang (Yalung Base camp ie South base camp).
After spending a remarkable length of time at South Base Camp, you will descend to Torongding. From Ramche, you have to descend down Simbhuwa Khola to reach Lamite Bhanjyang. From Torongding, you will follow the same route down to Ranipul via Yamphuding, Phumphe Danda, and Simbu. To successfully finish your Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek Itinerary, you will fly back to Kathmandu after travelling to Bhadrapur from Ranipul.

Challenges of Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek
The Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek is a challenging yet rewarding adventure that takes trekkers deep into the remote Himalayas of eastern Nepal. Known for being off the beaten trek and wilderness, it is often considered as the ‘most strenuous trek in Nepal‘, featuring long, steep ascents and descents, high-altitude passes, moraines, and landslide-prone areas. Despite having a lower elevation gain compared to the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp Trek, the south route demands physical strength, mental endurance, and proper preparation. Trekkers must navigate through limited infrastructure and basic facilities, making it a true test of resilience.
Altitude Sickness and Safety
Altitude sickness is a potential risk during the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek, as the trail reaches elevations of up to 4,700 meters. Symptoms like headaches, nausea, and breathing difficulties can occur, but these can be managed with proper acclimatization, hydration, and a steady pace. The trek itinerary includes ample rest days and gradual altitude gain to minimize risks. Experienced guides are always on hand to provide first aid and ensure safety throughout the journey.
Best Time for Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek
The best seasons to trek in Nepal for the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek is during spring (March to May) and autumn (October to November). Spring offers vibrant rhododendron blooms, clear skies, and mild weather, while autumn provides stable conditions, festive vibes, and stunning mountain views. Off-season treks in winter or monsoon are not recommended due to harsh weather, trail closures, and increased risks of landslides and avalanches.
Accommodation and Food
Accommodation during the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek trek is in basic tea houses, which offer shared rooms, communal dining areas, and limited amenities. Trekkers can enjoy traditional Nepalese and Tibetan cuisine, such as dal bhat, thukpa, and Tibetan bread, which provide the necessary energy for the journey. Travel insurance covering emergency air evacuation is highly recommended due to the remote location and limited transportation options.
