TRIP HIGHLIGHTS
- Rara Lake: The main attraction of the entire trek and a very silent, serene spot—absolutely stunning. The lake is surrounded by snow-capped mountains and green forests; deep inside these blue waters is an honest revelation of Rara Lake as a sight.
- Rara National Park: This trekking trail provides a chance to go inside the park, which is followed by large varieties of flora and fauna, including rare animals such as the snow leopard and red panda. The place is also a paradise for ornithologists, with numerous bird species present, like the Himalayan griffon vulture and several pheasants.
- The Himalayan Scenic Views: En route to the trails, trekkers will be treated to plenty of panoramic views with imposing surrounding peaks, including the Kanjirowa Himal to the north, Mount Sisne, and the salient summits of Jumla. The heightened altitudes of these ranges coupled with undulating hills and verdant valleys make for an extraordinary trek.
- Cultural Immersion: This trip gives you the chance to dip completely into the far-western cultural environment. Remote societies that you get to experience on the route retain traditional lifestyles, and their warm reception by locals will imprint its indelible marks forever in your hearts and minds.
- Serene Setting: The Rara Lake Trek has been isolated from all the other, more popular trek areas of Nepal. This is your chance at peace and quiet, and a way to really let go of modern society for some time.
TRIP OVERVIEW
Rara Lake Trek takes you to one of the purest and most interesting places of the country. It is situated at the far northest part of Nepal. Rara Lake, also popularly known as the “Hidden Gem of Nepal,” is a calm and adventurous journey that takes a person deep into the heart of Nepal’s far western area, away from the normal trekking throng. The largest lake in Nepal is hidden inside Rara National Park, and its crystal-clear blue water reflects almost surrealistically the high snow-capped mountains and lush forests surrounding it.
This 14-day Rara Lake Trek passes through lush pine and cedar forests, stunning vistas, and quaint communities. Trekkers, outdoor enthusiasts, and photography buffs find this trip irresistible, not to mention it is a silent and serene get-away from the hustle and bustle of the more popular Everest and Annapurna regions. The journey usually begins in the small towns of Nepalgunj or Surkhet and then slowly rises into the very heart of the Himalayas.
The trek generally begins from the small town of Nepalgunj or Surkhet and gradually climbs into the core of the Himalayas. The terrain gets more rugged as you approach the lake; hence, you are abreast with spectacular views of the surrounding mountains, including Mount Kanjirowa and other snow-capped peaks of the far west. The journey toward Rara Lake is ideal for those who want an amalgamation of culture and natural beauty, hence truly an experience.
What to Expect During the Rara Lake Trek:
The Rara Lake Trek is somewhat difficult, making it appropriate for trekkers with excellent fitness and prior expertise. After the scenic flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, one has to drive to the trailhead and then begin the gentle uphill walk through rich subtropical forests before reaching the alpine meadows and rugged terrain surrounding Rara Lake.
The landscape is very varied, with easy walks along the riverbanks and steep ascents up dense woodlands and high mountain ridges. The weather is also rather changeable, with temperatures varying from warm near the lower elevations to cool and even snowy near the lake. Yet as one goes higher and higher, carefully constructed trails keep the way passable for most.
Rara Lake is like one of the crowning jewels of this trek: on account of the fact that the deep blue water associated with the breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding Himalayas makes it an unforgettable tableau. One can walk around this lake and bask in its beauty or engage in a placid boat ride on its calm waters. It is very close to the surrounding forests, which host the Himalayan black bear and musk deer, besides a variety of bird species. It’s a nature lover’s paradise, to put it briefly.
The native populations of the area, namely those of the Chhetri, Magar, and Thakuri ethnic groups, will also be encountered along the journey. You’ll get the opportunity to witness the far western rural way of life, and these locals are renowned for their friendliness and warmth.
Best Season For Rara Lake Trek:
- The Rara Lake Trek can be best done during the perfect seasons: autumn, from September to November, and spring, from March to May.
- Autumn, September through November, is a particularly popular time as the weather is generally clear and dry, allowing unimpeded views of nearby mountains and the lake. Days are warm, and nights get cool enough to be refreshing, but not uncomfortable, so just ideal conditions for trekking.
- Spring, from March to May, is also an excellent time for a trek, as the weather is quite similar to autumn, with warm days accompanied by clear skies. During this season, there are also kaleidoscopic shows of colors in forests when flowers start blooming, adding more beauty to the landscape.
The winter months, from December to February, and the summer season, from June to August, are generally not recommended for the Rara Lake Trek. In winter, snow covers the area, and the temperature drops; on the other hand, during the summer monsoon, there are heavy rains, making the trails slippery and difficult.
