If you are planning to trek in the Everest region, your journey will almost always begin in Lukla (2,860m / 9,383 ft), known as the gateway to Everest trek. After landing at Tenzing–Hillary Airport/ Lukla Airport, most trekkers start their walk toward Phakding (2,610m / 8,563 ft) to begin their Himalayan adventure.
This small mountain town in Nepal’s Solukhumbu district is known as the gateway to Everest because nearly all trekking and climbing routes in the Everest region start from here. Whether you are heading to Everest Base Camp (5,364m / 17,598 ft), Kala Patthar (5,545m / 18,192 ft), Gokyo Lakes, High passes or attempting peak climbing such as Island Peak or Lobuche Peak, Mera Peak Lukla is where your Himalayan trek truly begins.
After landing in Lukla, trekkers usually start walking the same day toward Phakding (2,610m / 8,563 ft), the first overnight stop along the Everest Base Camp trek route . From there, the EBC trail continues to Namche Bazaar (3,440m / 11,286 ft), the main Sherpa town of the Everest region.
From Namche Bazaar, trekking routes branch into different directions toward Everest Base Camp, Gokyo Valley, or high mountain passes such as Cho La Pass (5,420m / 17,782 ft) and Renjo La Pass (5,360m / 17,585 ft).
Almost every Everest region trek begins and ends in Lukla.

How to Get to Lukla?
There are three main ways to reach Lukla depending on weather conditions, trekking style, and travel flexibility.
1. Lukla Flights from Kathmandu or Ramechhap
Most trekkers take a mountain flight to Lukla from Kathmandu (1,400m / 4,593 ft). However, during favourable trekking seasons Spring (March – May) and Autumn (September – November), most of the Lukla flights operate from Ramechhap Airport (Manthali), which is about a 4–5 hour drive from Kathmandu. From Ramechhap, the flight to Lukla takes about 20 minutes.

2. Kathmandu to Lukla Helicopter Flight
Helicopter flights are available directly from Kathmandu to Lukla. You can book a Helicopter in sharing basic which is lower in cost per person where private group charter flight is expensive but can fly in your flexible timing. Sharing cost may start from USD 400- 600 per person whereas Charter flight cost USD 2500 – 3000 per 5 person.
Helicopters can often operate in weather conditions where fixed-wing aircraft cannot. If weather conditions worsen and aircraft cannot land in Lukla, helicopters may land at Surke / Surkhe Helipad (approx. 5–10 minutes below Lukla by flight). From Surke, trekkers can walk for about one hour to reach Lukla and continue their trek.
Helicopters flying to Everest Base Camp or high mountain passes often land in Lukla for refueling before continuing onward. Cost may very based on Trek options like base camp, gokyo valley, Everest view hotel or other landmarks.
3. Road and Trekking Route to Lukla (Backup Option)
If flights are cancelled for several days due to weather, another option is:
Drive from Kathmandu to Salleri or Phaplu (approx. 9–10 hours)
This drive takes you upto Phaplu in above 10 Hrs and continue to offroad to Thamdanda (5–6 hours). After a full 1 day trek from Thamdanda lead you to Lukla.
In dry seasons, jeep services may reach Surkhe or Chaurikharka (about 1-hour walk from Lukla).
Another traditional trekking route begins from Phaplu and takes 3–4 days through villages such as Nunthala, Kharikhola before reaching Lukla.
Tenzing–Hillary Airport / Lukla Airport (LUA)
Lukla is home to Tenzing–Hillary Airport (2,846m / 9,337 ft), often described as one of the most dangerous airports in the world.
Airport Code: LUA
ICAO Code: VNLK
Runway Length: Approx. 527–550 meters

The runway sits on a mountain slope with a steep uphill gradient. One side of the runway faces a steep mountainside, while the opposite end opens toward a sharp drop into the valley below. Aircraft must land and take off within a very short distance.
Because of changing mountain weather and limited runway length, flights normally operate only during the early morning hours, usually before 10 AM. Later in the day, increasing winds and cloud cover often make flight operations risky.
Pilots flying into Lukla must be specially trained for high-altitude mountain landings.
Is Lukla Airport Safe?
Tenzing–Hillary Airport (2,846m / 9,337 ft) is often described as one of the most dangerous airports in the world because of its short runway and mountain location. However, flights operate under strict aviation guidelines and are handled by experienced pilots trained for high-altitude landings. While weather delays are common, safety remains the top priority for all Lukla flights.

Plan at least one extra day in your itinerary for possible flight delays due to weather. Book Lukla flights early during peak trekking seasons such as spring and autumn. Staying hydrated and resting properly on your first day helps your body adjust to the altitude before beginning the trek.
How to Book Lukla Flight Ticket?
Here’s what most trekkers don’t realize about Lukla flights until it’s too late.
If you search online, you’ll find plenty of websites offering Lukla flights from Kathmandu or even monthly departures during trekking season. The three main airlines operating these mountain flights are Tara Air, Sita Air, and Summit Air, and yes, you can try booking directly through their official websites.
But during peak Everest trekking months, seats are often already taken well in advance by travel agencies that have pre-booked tickets for their Everest Base Camp trek groups. Because these are small Twin Otter aircraft with very limited seating and weather-restricted flying hours, flights fill up fast and don’t operate throughout the day. That makes last-minute or independent bookings difficult.
Another key point: when flights get delayed or rescheduled due to mountain weather, online ticket providers usually can’t assist much, while agencies managing Everest region packages can rearrange your seats on the next available flight. So, booking early through a reliable trekking company like EBC Trails Trek & Expedition significantly improves your chances of securing and managing your Lukla flight smoothly.
