TRIP OVERVIEW
The Poon Hill Mardi Himal Trek is a 12-day immersive journey that seamlessly combines two iconic Nepal’s Annapurna region trek, making it a must-experience for trekkers looking for both popular routes and offbeat paths. This trek is well-suited for adventure seekers who wish to enjoy moderate-level trekking, with trails that highlight both the bustling and tranquil sides of Nepal’s Himalayan beauty. Participants on this trek are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views, encounters with local cultures, and an intimate experience of the region’s unique biodiversity.
The Poon Hill Mardi Himal trek offers a perfect balance of nature, culture, and scenic splendor. Starting with a scenic drive to Pokhara, the itinerary takes trekkers through Poon Hill (3,210 m/10,531 ft), which is known for its sunrise views that illuminate the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges in a golden glow. Afterward, the journey weaves through culturally rich villages like Ghorepani and Ghandruk, introducing trekkers to the warm hospitality of the Gurung and Magar communities. The second phase of the trek explores the quieter Mardi Himal route, leading up to the Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500 m/14,765 ft), where sweeping views of Machapuchare (6,997 m/22,957 ft) dominate the skyline. Additionally, the Mardi Himal trail is a haven for birdwatchers, offering the chance to observe over 150 different bird species along the route.
This combination trek is also ideal for families, groups, or solo travelers looking for a moderate trekking challenge. The trek does not require advanced mountaineering skills, yet it provides ample opportunity to witness a range of ecosystems—from subtropical forests to alpine landscapes. The entire route lies within the Annapurna Conservation Area, which means trekkers will encounter diverse flora and fauna along the way. The experience culminates with time spent in Pokhara, a vibrant lakeside city known for its relaxing ambiance and bustling local markets.
The Mardi Himal Trek via Poon Hill is generally considered as one of the easy treks in Nepal but is also a captivating 12-day journey that begins with a scenic bus ride from Kathmandu to Pokhara, followed by a drive to Birethanti, the trek’s starting point. The trek progresses through terraced fields filled with paddy and mustard and winds through the Magar and Gurung villages of Hile and Tikhedhunga before reaching Ulleri. From there, trekkers move through rhododendron forests and the charming village of Banthanti to reach Ghorepani. An early morning ascent to Poon Hill offers stunning sunrise views over Machapuchare and the surrounding peaks. The route continues through Tadapani, Ghandruk, and Landruk before transitioning into the Mardi Himal section. Trekkers journey through Forest Camp and Low Camp, marked by beautiful forests of rhododendron, pine, and oak, before ascending to High Camp. A day hike to Mardi Himal Base Camp provides breathtaking views without heavy packs, followed by a descent through Badal Danda to Sidhing. The trek concludes with a shared vehicle ride back to Pokhara, where you can enjoy boating on Phewa Lake before returning to Kathmandu by bus.

Is the Mardi Himal Trek Difficult than PoonHill?
The Mardi Himal Trek is slightly more challenging than the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek due to its steeper ascents, narrow ridges, and higher altitude. While Poon Hill maxes out at around 3,210 meters (10,531 ft), the Mardi Himal Trek reaches elevations up to 4,500 meters (14,764 ft) at the base camp, requiring more physical endurance. The Mardi Himal trail also involves a tougher uphill trek to the Upper View Point, with narrower paths that may be challenging for those new to trekking. Snow and icy conditions can add complexity, especially with crevasses, making it important for trekkers to follow guides closely and avoid solo travel during winter months. For those in good physical shape, both treks are manageable, though Mardi Himal is generally rated as more strenuous.
Both treks offer rewarding views but differ in difficulty and adventure level, making Mardi Himal a good choice for trekkers seeking a moderate challenge while Poon Hill remains ideal for beginners or those looking for a more relaxed experience.
